Global Day of Action on Burma, campaigners in Bangkok will
MARCH FOR PEACE AND DEMOCRACY IN BURMA
and tell the Thai government to “Help refugees, stop trade” Tomorrow Thai campaigners will mark the Global Day of Action on Burma and the anniversary of the 6th October 1976 Thai student fight for democracy
by marching from Democracy Monument to Thammasat University.
They will use the occasion to tell the Thai government that they need to do more to help the Burmese people by:
Helping refugees fleeing from Burma to Thailand
Stopping all trade with the junta

As a result of the brutal crackdown on demonstrators, more Burmese people are fleeing into Thailand to escape the junta’s rule. Mass arrests continue to be made as the military hunt down protestors, declaring
“We have photos. We are going to make arrests!”. Fearing torture and even death, some Burmese people have begun to flee into Thailand. More are expected to arrive as they make their way through Burma and across the border.
“The Thai authorities, as well as UNHCR, must treat these refugees – both those just arriving and those who have been here long-term – with dignity and respect. They are literally fleeing for their lives.
“The Thai government must be more accommodating. We received reports last week that dozens of Burmese were deported after taking part in demonstrations in Thailand against the junta. This is unacceptable,
” said the Thai campaigners. Campaigners will also demand that the Thai government stop trading the military junta. The close economic ties between Thailand and Burma have helped prop up the dictatorship and prolong the junta’s rule.
“Natural gas exported to Thailand and massive hydropower projects bring in a huge amount of foreign exchange for the junta.
“The Thai government must take concrete action to pressure the Burmese generals. While India and China are obviously the biggest investors in the country, the Thai government also has leverage, and it must exert it.” Information for journalists:

ร่วมรำลึกถึงประชาชนที่เสียชีวิตเนื่องมาจากการใช้ความรุนแรงของรัฐในการปราบปรามประชาชน
ทั้งในประเทศไทย และพม่า ณ บริเวณลานโพธิ์ (ด้านหน้าคณะศิลปศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์)
ร่วมร้องเพลง อ่านบทกวี และแถลงการณ์ขององค์กรและกลุ่มประชาชนต่างๆ เพื่อเรียกร้องสันติภาพ
และยุติความรุนแรงที่เกิดขึ้นในพม่า
จุดเทียนส่องทางแก่หนทางไปสู่ประชาธิปไตย และส่งกำลังไปถึงประชาชนพม่า
หลังจากนั้นร่วมทัวร์ประชาธิปไตยย้อนรอยรำลึกถึงเหตุการณ์การต่อสู้ทางการเมืองของประชาชนไทย
พูดคุยเพื่อรับรู้และแลกเปลี่ยนเรื่องราวการต่อสู้เพื่อประชาธิปไตยจากประชาชนสู่ประชาชน ณ บริเวณลานปรีดีฯ
